This book offers a lively guide to the evidence of archaeology, history, language and literature for the cultural history of Anglo-Saxon England. The book is not intended to narrate the history of England from the fifth century to the Norman Conquest in 1066, but rather to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the conditions within which that history was made. The approach is thematic, covering all aspects of Anglo-Saxon life, from the climate and geography of England during the period, through discussions of economic development and social structures, to religious life and achievements in art and architecture.
