The proposed book, “English in the Expanding Circle,” focuses on the spread, use, status, and functions of English in those contexts in which this language has not necessarily been imposed by a colonial authority or is not generally a native language, that is, the Expanding Circle of World Englishes (Kachru, 1985 and after). Such contexts include countries of Latin America, Western and Central Europe, and Eastern and Central Asia where English has traditionally been taught as a foreign language as well as former colonies in Africa (e.g., Algeria, Cameroon, The Republic of Congo) or Southeastern Asia (e.g., Vietnam), which are gradually moving from a colonial language (e.g., French) toward English and in which English is increasingly favored and promoted as a second language.

With the expanding role of English in such contexts, demand increases for English instruction in primary to secondary schooling, in higher education and the academy, and in the workplace. This development leaves all concerned faced with a) choices concerning the formal and functional properties of the English they use, b) inevitable changes in language, culture, and society, and c) challenges in adapting to the changes.

Although a growing number of studies have been or are being undertaken that investigate the spread of English to and within individual countries or sub-regions of the Expanding Circle (e.g., Berns, de Bot, & Hasebrink, 2006, for Europe; Berns & Friedrich, 2003, for South America; Proshina, 2005, for Russia; Bolton & Tong, 2002, for China), no comprehensive treatment is available that presents and discusses the implications of the findings with respect to a) the World Englishes paradigm (theory), b) empirical and hermeneutic approaches to Expanding Circle scholarship (research), and c) language policy and pedagogy (practice).
