  • Description
Until the 20th century, instruction in the Greek and Latin classics was a central part of education in the western world. Themes and subjects from classical literature and art were part of the repetoire of a huge range of writers and artists; at the same time questions first raised by Plato and Aristotle were vital to philosophy.

The Classical Tradition is thus a large and diverse part of our western heritage. Yet there exists no single, concise treatment that attempts to encompass the Classical Tradition as a coherent whole.

The proposed book will offer a unified view of the territory in its entirety. It will aim to provide a concise point of reference (including bibliographical reference) for the Classical Tradition and its multifarious aspects, and a critical and innovative review of selected examples.

The book will be theoretically informed and actively engaged in current debate on a variety of issues, from hermeneutics to gender. Among its themes will be the ideological implications of the Classical Tradition and the relation between high culture and low, the interplay between the Classical Tradition and the histories of scholarship and education, and the complex of relationships between art, literature and thought.
