Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are very common worldwide. More than 20 different STIs have been identified, and about 19 million men and women are infected each year in the United States, according to the CDC (2010). STIs can be spread through any type of sexual activity involving the sex organs, the anus, or the mouth; an infection can also be spread through contact with blood during sexual activity. STIs can be infrequently transmitted through blood, body fluids or tissue from the infected person. People sharing unsterilized needles, markedly increase the chance to acquire and pass on many STIs, to others. Hepatitis types A, B, C, E are not specifically classified as STIs but are infrequently noted to be transferred during sexual activity.

STIs affect men and women of all ages and backgrounds, including children. STIs have become more common in recent years, partly because people are becoming sexually active at a younger age, are having multiple partners, and do not use preventive methods.

Health problems and long-term consequences from STIs tend to be more severe for women than for men. Some STIs can cause pelvic infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Most STIs transmit through sexual contact with the persons suffering from such infections. However, some infections, for example scabies, have been kept under the category of STIs because these are most commonly transmitted sexually.

This book explores the complete picture from epidemiology, causative pathogens to clinical impact and immunology. Although the causative pathogens may differ, but the clinical outcome, immune evasion strategies, immune response, and long-term sequelae share many common features. Finally, both the pathogen and the host immune response contribute to damage to the health, and therefore, any prevention or treatment strategies need to address both of these factors.

The significance of diagnostics of sexually transmitted infection is anticipated to increase with advances in interventions and health information technology. The proposed book will provide latest knowledge to virologists, microbiologists, infectious disease experts, vaccinologists, biomedical researchers, clinicians, pharmacologists, and public health specialists to gather the knowledge about recent advances in sexually transmitted infections in an interdisciplinary fashion. The spectrum of discussion in this book will range from introduction of causative pathogen, their pathogenesis to epidemiology, immunology, to anatomy and physiology of human genitalia and management strategies.
