The 1st edition of Chemical Engineering in the Pharmaceutical Industry contained 44 Chapters and was 887 pages on 8 ½ x 11 page format. The book was divided into 3 Parts: API (Active pharmaceutical ingredient), Drug Products, and Analytics. The new edition includes 20 to 25 new chapters and most of the original chapters are updated or expanded with additional example calculations of interest to Chemical Engineers. Given the expanded length, the contents have been split into 2 volumes, across the broad topics of Drug Substance and Drug Product.
The first standalone volume covers Drug Substance / Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient. It focuses on the chemistry, chemical engineering, and unit operations specific to developing and manufacturing the pharmaceutically active components of the pharmaceutical product. Drug substance unit operations include chemical reactions, mixing, distillations, extractions, crystallizations, filtration, drying, and wet and dry milling. In addition, many modern software tools are discussed in the book and are geared toward batch-scale drug substance pharmaceutical operations.
The second volume entitled Drug Product (DP) focuses on the development and chemical engineering and unit operations specific to design, formulation, and manufacture of drug products.
