Preservation of cells is an integral part of biotechnology research to improve human health and to treat injury and disease, but is often an invisible part of the biotechnology revolution. It enables preservation of the critical biological properties of cells at one time and location so that they can be used at another time and in another location. For many who use preservation, the process is poorly understood and as a result, the ability to improve outcome or develop new protocols that are proper.

This book is intended to provide the tools needed to develop or debug a preservation protocol for cells. People who use cell preservation (but who are not experts in freezing of cells) can use the book.  It will also provide the scientific basis for those that want to understand the basis for the protocol. The individual elements of a protocol are described step by step including the relevant scientific principles for each step of the protocol.

The core structure and content of this book grew from a professional short course that has been offered for the last 10 years at the Biopreservation Core Resource.
