  • Description

Handbook of Liver Pathologywill provide hepatologists and pathologists with a well-illustrated, multi-media guide to the pathology and clinical diagnosis of liver disease.  At 400pp, it isn’t designed to be an encyclopaedic pathology textbook; instead a rapid reference consultation tool, perfect for quickly and accurately identifying and diagnosing liver disease in their patients.

Each chapter focuses on a specific area of liver disease and is divided into 2 parts: specific cases and disease analysis The range, number and quality of the images as well as the clinical disease analysis will ensure it is a key part of their armoury when interpreting path slides ain order to reach a clinical diagnosis.

Specific cases:The number of cases range from one to four per chapter, with each case focused on a specific disease.  For example, in the chapter on viral hepatitis, case studies on acute viral hepatitis and fulminant hepatitiswill be presented.  Each case will include patient history, clinical presentation, lab values, biopsy images and the investigative procedures undergone, as well as comments and a brief discussion/interpretation of clinical parameters and laboratory values.

The disease analysis will concisely examine the range of conditions in each area of liver disease, thus providing the user with the tools required to best formulate a diagnosis.  As well as pathology, appropriate epidemiology, clinical/laboratory values, representative images, pathophysiology and differential diagnoseswill all be included.  Tables will list the various disease possibilities, similarities and differences, and other features to help arrive at a diagnosis.

An online image librarywillprovide an additional 600 images not found in the print book.  For example, for the “Primary Biliary Cirrhosis" chapter, the print book will contain the 5-6 really key pathology images; however the online library will contain an additional 20-25 typical and atypical examples, each with a caption.

Finally, key references will appear at the end of each chapter, with links to PubMed and other citations in the e-book.  In general, chapters will be characterized by being non-verbose, to the point, and focused on containing pertinent but concise information for the reader.

Commercial rationale

We are extremely strong in hepatology but as it stands, don’t have a book dedicated to liver pathology.  Morson and Dawson’s Gastrointestinal Pathology 5E, one of our key copyrights is the closest example and sells in great numbers; however it covers all of the GI system bar the liver.  This book will be a very useful addition to our GI/hepatology and pathology list and should prove very popular.
