Dicoordinated carbocations, namely vinyl and aryl cations, are part of what is arguably the most important family of reactive intermediates in organic chemistry, i.e., carbocations. The significance of this field was recently recognised with a Nobel Prize to Professor G. A. Olah. Dicoordinated Carbocations summarises the advances in the field achieved by applying computational techniques, mass and NMR spectrometry, nuclear decay, laser flash photolysis, solvolysis and photochemistry, which have provided new and interesting insights into the nature and chemistry of dicoordinated carbocations over the past twenty years. This new understanding allows the synthetic chemist to use vinyl cations in synthetic transformations and natural product synthesis. This monograph has been written for organic chemists but it is also relevant for theoretical and computational, and synthetic chemists.
